B.Arch: The Architecture Degree

5 yearsBachelor of Architecture
CoAregulator and NATA conductor
2 examsNATA · JEE Main Paper 2
LicenceCoA registration to practise

B.Arch is a 5-year professional degree regulated by the Council of Architecture (CoA). To use the title Architect in India, a person must be registered with the CoA, and the degree must follow CoA minimum standards.

What You Study

  • Design studio and drawing
  • Building construction and structures
  • History and theory of architecture
  • Urban design and sustainability

Related Degrees

  • B.Planning: urban and regional planning, admitted through JEE Main Paper 2B.
  • M.Arch / M.Planning: postgraduate study, usually through GATE (Architecture & Planning).

How B.Arch Admission Works

Route Conducted by Where it is used
NATA Council of Architecture Used by state counselling and most architecture colleges. Held in multiple sessions.
JEE Main Paper 2A National Testing Agency Used for NITs, Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) and other centrally funded institutes, with seats allotted through JoSAA.
JEE Advanced + AAT IITs Used by IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee for B.Arch (Architecture Aptitude Test after JEE Advanced). Confirm current IIT rules on the JoSAA and IIT sites.

Important

A NATA score alone does not give a seat. The CoA runs no central counselling; each state or college runs its own, so students register separately for each state or institute process.

B.Arch Eligibility

To take NATA 2026 To join B.Arch Year 1
10+2 with Physics and Mathematics, or a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics
Minimum aggregate marks as per the CoA brochure (a 45% minimum was reported for 2026)
Students appearing in 10+2 can apply
Limited attempts per year; the best score counts
No upper age limit is fixed for NATA
CoA norms: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with 50% in PCM and 50% overall
A valid NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 score for that year
Each state or college may add its own cutoff

Check the brochure: rules vary by state and college and change yearly. Confirm in the CoA brochure at nata.in and the counselling prospectus.

Who Runs These Exams?

Ten exams fall into three groups. Government and national institutes are the most sought after and the most affordable. Specialists such as IICD focus on crafts, and AIFD is run by the Army. Private institutes have their own entrance tests, often followed by a portfolio review. Almost all lead to a 4-year B.Des.

Government and national Specialist institutes Private and university-run
NIFT: fashion and textiles
NID DAT: design institute
UCEED: IITs and IIITDM
FDDI AIST: footwear and leather
AIFD WAT: Army institute, Bengaluru
IICD: crafts and design, Jaipur
AIEED: ARCH, Jaipur and Gurgaon
SMEAT: Srishti Manipal
Pearl Academy: 5 campuses
UPES DAT: Dehradun

Common route: a 4-year B.Des after 10+2 in any stream (AIFD offers a 3-year B.Sc).

How Design Admissions Work

Step Stage What happens
Step 1 Register online Apply inside the exam window; keep 10+2 details and photo ready.
Step 2 Stage 1 test Aptitude and creativity: GAT / CAT, DAT Prelims, UCEED Part A + B.
Step 3 Stage 2 round Studio or situation test, portfolio review, personal interview.
Step 4 Merit list Stage scores combine into a rank, then institutes allot seats.

Weights differ: IICD scores 35% Part A + 45% Part B + 20% interview. The names differ but the pattern repeats: a written aptitude stage, a practical or interview stage, then merit and counselling. Always read each brochure for exact rules.
