Pathways: Four Ways Into These Degrees

Subjects come from the college course lists (for example Loyola, Presidency, MCC and Stella Maris offer B.Sc. in physics, chemistry, mathematics and biotech, and B.A. in economics, history, English, sociology and international studies). Degrees are typically 3-year B.A./B.Sc., 4-year BS, or 5-year BS-MS / integrated M.Sc.

5-year BS-MS: Biological, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical, Earth & Environmental Sciences.
4-year BS: Engineering Sciences; Economic Sciences (IISER Bhopal).
PG option: Integrated M.Sc. & Ph.D. programmes.
Eligibility
10+2 in Science stream: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics / Biology (passed 2025 or 2026, or appearing in 2027); 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST/PwD); no age limit. The brochure confirms exact subject rules each year.
Marking and sections
+4 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer. 4 sections of 15 questions each: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology.
Fees
₹40,000 – ₹65,000 per semester (about ₹80,000 – ₹1.3 lakh per year at IISERs).
Exam centres
Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Salem.
Elsewhere: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and more.
Other premier institutes
IISc Bangalore (BS degree) and IIT Madras (BS Medical Sciences & Engineering) are also listed with IAT. Check each site for its own admission route.

- Update: for 2026-27, IISER admissions are based solely on IAT; the older JEE Advanced and KVPY channels no longer apply.
- Last cycle (2026) for reference: applications Mar 5 – Apr 13, 2026; exam Jun 7, 2026, 9 am – 12 noon; admit card in late May.
- Other sources expect the application window to close around mid-April and the exam in early June, so treat dates as tentative and watch iiseradmission.in.
- IISc Bangalore and IIT Madras run their own programmes and admission processes; check their official sites.

Pure-science degrees feed research careers, policy research, data science and quantitative roles. Many graduates continue to a Ph.D., which is why IISERs run integrated M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes.

About 200 seats at NISER and about 57–59 at CEBS in the latest batch.

Science stream 10+2; no upper age limit. See the NEST brochure for exact marks.
Exam format
Computer-based national screening test; each institute then runs its own counselling.

Research-oriented basic-science programmes run by Department of Atomic Energy institutions.
Good to know
- NEST is the compulsory entrance for the 5-year Integrated M.Sc. at NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai.
- Other sources expect the notification in mid-December 2026 or early January 2027, an application deadline around early to mid April, and the exam in the first week of June 2027. The 2026 exam was on June 6.
3.2 ISI: B.Stat and B.Math

None of the exams in this guide has a deadline this month. Use October to December to build Class 12 fundamentals, shortlist colleges and keep documents ready.
