Degree and branch lists are compiled from college course lists: for example VIT offers about 30 B.Tech specialisations, SRM and MIT Manipal offer CS, AI, Cloud, Aerospace and Biomedical options, and NIT Trichy offers Production, MME and Instrumentation & Control. IITs also offer B.S., dual degrees and integrated M.Tech or M.Sc. programmes through JEE Advanced.
Three Doors into Engineering
| Door | Exams | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|
| National | JEE Main + JEE Advanced | IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs through JoSAA / CSAB counselling. JEE Main is used for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs; JEE Advanced for IITs. |
| State | TNEA, MHT CET, WBJEE, COMEDK | State government and private colleges; each state runs its own test or merit counselling. Tamil Nadu uses Class 12 marks (TNEA). |
| Institute-specific | BITSAT, VITEEE, SRMJEEE, MET, AEEE | Private universities (BITS, VIT, SRM, Manipal, Amrita) with their own entrance tests and counselling. |
| Best plan Use one door from each column so you are never left without options. Many students apply through all three. |

Correction on JEE Advanced
An earlier guide said candidates must rank in the “top 2,500,000”; the correct cap is the top 2.5 lakh (250,000) candidates in JEE Main Paper 1. JEE Advanced also needs 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or a place in the top 20 percentile of the board, and a maximum of two attempts in consecutive years. JEE Main allows candidates who have passed or are appearing, with no upper age limit; the NTA bulletin sets the number of attempts.

TNEA: Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions
| Step | How it works |
|---|---|
| Step 1 | Register online at tneaonline.org. |
| Step 2 | Certificates are verified; rank list is published. |
| Step 3 | Choice filling and counselling rounds by rank. |
| Step 4 | Allotment, then join the college. |
Your TNEA cutoff (out of 200)
Maths + Physics ÷ 2 + Chemistry ÷ 2. Example: Maths 90, Physics 88, Chemistry 86 gives 90 + 44 + 43 = 177 / 200. Maths carries half the score, so every Maths mark counts double compared with Physics or Chemistry.
- 2026 cycle: registration May 3 – Jun 2; rank list around Jun 29 – Jul 1; general counselling from Jul 20.
- TNEA ranks students on Class 12 marks reduced to a score out of 200: Mathematics (100) plus half of Physics plus half of Chemistry.
- Anna University colleges, SSN, PSG, TCE and most private colleges in Tamil Nadu fill seats through TNEA. Check tneaonline.org each year.
Tamil Nadu Pathways
| Top national rank | Strong Class 12 marks | Private entrance route |

| Class 12 boards | Marks decide TNEA rank and eligibility (45–75% rules). |
| Timed mocks | Practise 3-hour papers with the right marking scheme. |
| Know negatives | JEE and BITSAT penalise wrong answers; VIT and SRM do not. |
| Apply to a mix | JEE Main + TNEA + two or three private tests. |
| Track windows | Registration dates differ for every exam; set reminders now. |
Marking schemes: JEE Main +4/−1, BITSAT +3/−1, AEEE +3/−1, while VITEEE, SRMJEEE and COMEDK have no negative marking.
Key Takeaways
- Ten exams, three doors: national (JEE), state (TNEA) and private entrance tests. Apply to a mix.
- JEE Advanced needs the top 2.5 lakh in JEE Main, 75% in Class 12 (or top 20 percentile) and 2 attempts.
- JEE Main Session 1 is Jan 22–30, 2027; BITSAT opens from December; TNEA registration comes around May.
- Tamil Nadu: IIT Madras, NIT Trichy, Anna University, then VIT, SRM, Amrita, SSN, PSG, SASTRA and TCE.
