An Industrial Training Institute (ITI) gives short, hands-on, job-ready training in a skilled trade after Class 8 or Class 10. This guide explains the trades and eligibility, how admission works (mostly merit-based and run by each state), the Tamil Nadu system run by the Directorate of Employment and Training (DET), fees and free benefits, apprenticeship, the routes to a polytechnic diploma or a degree, and careers.

Please note

Information is current as of October 8, 2026, compiled from admission portals and listing sites. ITI admission is run by each state, so rules, dates and fees differ. Dates for 2027 are expected patterns based on 2026; confirm every detail on the official portal before applying.

  • Pressure to pay large amounts for a seat or “guaranteed jobs”
  • No workshops, tools or qualified instructors
  • Unclear fee schedules for private ITIs

Key Takeaways
