JEE Advanced is the main door to the IITs, but it is not the only one. This guide covers four alternate routes into top institutes: UCEED for B.Des at IITs, the IIT Madras online BS degrees through a qualifier, Olympiad-based direct entry to CMI, ISI and IIT Bombay, and NID DAT for design.

Why Alternate Routes? JEE Is Not the Only Door
These routes sit beside JEE, not instead of it. Many students keep JEE as a backup. The Olympiad route is for exceptional problem-solvers; the other routes are open to any student who meets the eligibility.

UG: B.Des (Bachelor of Design), a direct route into IIT campuses without JEE. PG: M.Des via CEED.
Eligibility
Class 12 (passed 2026 or appearing 2027) in any stream; born on or after Oct 1, 2002 (5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD); maximum 2 attempts.
Where
IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Roorkee and IIITDM Jabalpur; 20+ other design schools accept UCEED scores.
Scope
UX/UI, product, interaction, mobility and game design, creative direction and communication.
Exam Format
Part A (2 hrs, computer-based): NAT, MSQ and MCQ questions.
Part B (1 hr): sketching and design aptitude (pen and paper).
Marking: negative marks on MCQ and MSQ; none on NAT.
Centres: 27+ cities, including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli.

Which IITs Accept Which Stream?
PCM science students can apply to all participating institutes.
Arts, Commerce and non-PCM students: IIT Bombay, Delhi and Hyderabad (some guides add IIT Indore).
IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee need a science stream.

IIT Madras BS Degrees (Online, Through a Qualifier)
Open to anyone who completed Class 12 (or equivalent), regardless of age, stream or JEE score, through an in-person direct-entry qualifier. The degree is awarded by IIT Madras.

Up to 75% for families earning under ₹5 L and for SC/ST/PwD categories (50% to 75%).
No age limit
JEE candidates also get a direct entry option.

How the Qualifier Works

Fill the qualifier application on study.iitm.ac.in (fee ₹4,000; ₹2,000 for SC/ST/PwD).

4 weeks of content
Online lectures and weekly graded assignments.

Qualifier exam
4-hour in-person invigilated exam on the four weeks of foundation content (objective and numerical questions).

Join Foundation
Register for Foundation courses after clearing the qualifier.
Passing rule: minimum 40% in weekly assignments, then the qualifier cutoff.
Validity: a qualifier result stays valid for about two terms (roughly one year).
Class 11 students can take the qualifier but cannot register for courses until they clear Class 12.
Exam centres: 100+ Indian cities (including major Tamil Nadu cities) and abroad (for example UAE, Oman, Singapore).

Three terms a year: January, May and September, with qualifiers about every four months (exams in March, July and November). An earlier guide listed batch windows of Nov–Dec 2026 (January 2027 batch), Feb–Apr 2027 (May 2027 batch) and Jun–Aug 2027 (September 2027 batch). Round dates on IIT Madras pages and in earlier guides differ slightly, so always confirm at study.iitm.ac.in.

Olympiad Entry: CMI, ISI and IIT Bombay
Winners and awardees of national-level science and mathematics Olympiads (INMO, INPhO, INChO) are recognised for exceptional problem-solving depth. Institutions such as CMI, ISI and select IITs offer admission channels that bypass or substitute standard, speed-oriented entrance exams.

CMI, ISI and IIT Bombay
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI)
- Programmes: B.Sc (Hons.) Mathematics & Computer Science; B.Sc (Hons.) Mathematics & Physics.
- INMO awardees (students who qualify INMO and attend or qualify for the IMO Training Camp) are exempt from the written CMI entrance exam, subject to the Admissions Committee’s discretion.
- CMI directly invites these candidates to apply under the Olympiad category. Admission offers or direct interviews follow, based on Olympiad tier.
Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)
- Programmes: B.Stat. (Hons.) Kolkata; B.Math. (Hons.) Bengaluru; B.S. in Data Science.
- INMO awardees (including those selected for IMOTC) skip the written ISI Admission Test and are shortlisted directly for the personal interview.
- A faculty panel tests mathematical maturity, proof-writing and conceptual understanding. Final admission is based on interview performance.
IIT Bombay: B.S. in Mathematics
- No JEE Advanced rank needed. IIT Bombay opens a separate application window for INMO awardees.
- INMO-qualified-list candidates apply directly to the Department of Mathematics; a short internal screening test or interview follows, then offer letters are issued.
- Other IITs (such as IIT Madras, Kanpur and Gandhinagar) are reported to have Olympiad (SCOPE) routes; verify before relying on them.
What You Need to Apply

Apply on each institute portal in its annual cycle (window: February to April 2027 via Olympiad qualifiers).

Upload the INMO / INPhO / INChO qualification certificate issued by HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education) or NBHM (National Board for Higher Mathematics).

Pass Class 12 boards with the institute’s minimum percentage; this remains mandatory.

Interview or department test follows.
Why Direct Entry Exists
Proof-based rigour: JEE emphasises speed and broad problem-solving techniques. Olympiad papers test creative proof writing, deep analytical reasoning and original thinking, skills crucial for research in mathematics, physics and theoretical computer science.
Identification of specialised talent: students who clear national Olympiads have already shown university-level maturity in their subject.

CIPET Chennai (Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals, Central Government) is affiliated to Anna University; TNEA is reported for B.Tech, and diplomas are through CIPET JEE.
Anna University SAP admits to B.Arch on NATA scores through TNEA; B.Plan is not confirmed.
