How Admission Works in Tamil Nadu
| Route | Details |
|---|---|
| IHM Chennai | Through NCHM JEE and centralised counselling (nchmcounselling.nic.in); the Class 12 pass and English requirement apply |
| Government arts and science colleges | Merit counselling on Class 12 marks via TNGASA (tngasa.in); check whether a hotel management or catering science option is offered |
| Private colleges and universities | Own applications with merit lists, interviews or university entrance tests; many admit directly on Class 12 marks |
Your Tamil Nadu pathways
Aim for IHM Chennai through NCHM JEE (the standard route). Keep a backup in a Tamil Nadu arts and science college (PSG, Sri Krishna, HICAS) or a university (SRM, Saveetha, VISTAS). For top-tier private options outside the state, add IIHM eCHAT, Christ and WGSHA.

Which Route Fits You?
| If you… | Consider |
|---|---|
| I want the most respected, affordable degree | NCHM JEE and B.Sc HHA at an IHM (IHM Chennai in Tamil Nadu) |
| I want a 4-year private BHM with strong brands | WGSHA Manipal, Christ, Amity, IIHM |
| I love cooking and food | Culinary degrees (IIHM, Symbiosis, IHM food production specialisation) and B.Sc Catering Science |
| I want management and events | BBA Hospitality or Tourism & Travel Management; event management electives |
| I want to stay in Tamil Nadu on a budget | PSG CAS, Sri Krishna, HICAS and government arts colleges; IHM Chennai via NCHM JEE |
| I want to work with an industry brand directly | Oberoi STEP (OCLD), Taj and ITC training programmes |
Prepare Smart
| Tip | Why |
|---|---|
| Strengthen English | English carries 240 of 800 marks in NCHM JEE, and communication drives hotel careers |
| Practise service aptitude | Situational judgement and customer-service scenarios are 200 marks |
| Follow current affairs | General Knowledge & Current Affairs is 120 marks |
| Build people skills | Group discussions and interviews decide private admissions |
| Verify affiliation | Check NCHMCT affiliation and UGC recognition before paying fees |
| Ask about training | Look for supervised industrial exposure training and real placement records |
Red Flags
- “Guaranteed placement” or “100% placement” claims with no named employers or data
- Direct admission pressure or “pay today to hold the seat”
- Colleges that cannot show NCHMCT affiliation or a UGC-recognised degree
- Hidden charges for uniforms, kits and training that are not in the written fee schedule
Key Takeaways
- NCHM JEE is the main door to B.Sc HHA at central, state and affiliated IHMs: 200 MCQs, 800 marks, 3 hours, +4 / −1. Expect the 2027 notification in December 2026 and the exam in the last week of April 2027.
- Private routes (IIHM eCHAT, Christ, WGSHA, UGAT, state CETs and direct merit) cost more, so compare fees against placements.
- In Tamil Nadu: IHM Chennai through NCHM JEE, plus PSG CAS, Sri Krishna, HICAS, SRM, Saveetha and other colleges.
- Confirm everything (age limit, seats, fees and dates) in each official brochure, since sources differ.
Before you apply
Verify affiliation, fees and dates on official sites. Rules, seats and fees change every year.
