Psychology: UG Courses, Eligibility, Colleges and the Clinical Route

Degrees, eligibility, the clinical licensing route and top colleges across India and Tamil Nadu

Licensed to Isprieth Academy · Learn • Share • Empower

This guide covers undergraduate psychology: the degrees on offer, who is eligible, how admission works (CUET-UG, merit lists, college tests), a major change in how clinical psychologists are trained and licensed in India, new programmes launched across the country, and the best colleges nationally and in Tamil Nadu.

Please note

Fees are approximate. Some details differ from the earlier source guide where newer information was found; the notes explain each change. Dates for 2027 are tentative (as of October 8, 2026); confirm with each college and the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).

UG Psychology Degrees

Degree What it is Length
BA (Hons) Psychology Humanities-based; any stream at DU and BHU 3 years, or 4 with honours / research
BSc (Hons) Psychology Science-based: neuroscience, statistics, experiments 3–4 years
BA Applied Psychology Counselling, organisational and social applications (e.g. DU) 3–4 years
BSc Clinical Psychology (RCI) New 4-year RCI-approved degree; Class 12 Science 4 years
5-year integrated MSc BSc exit at year 3, BSc (Hons) at year 4 (e.g. University of Hyderabad) 5 years
BA Social Sciences / Counselling Psychology within social science or counselling degrees (e.g. TISS, Loyola) 3–4 years

The earlier source lists B.A. (Hons) Psychology, B.Sc (Hons) Psychology, B.A. Programme with a psychology combination, B.Sc Clinical Psychology and B.Sc Counselling Psychology. Other main UG forms seen in 2026 admissions are added: DU BA Applied Psychology and Multidisciplinary Studies with a psychology major, the new RCI-approved 4-year BSc Clinical Psychology, and 5-year integrated MSc programmes. Under NEP many universities now offer a 4-year honours option.

BA vs BSc vs RCI Clinical

Degree Typical eligibility Length Professional status
BA / BSc (Hons) Psychology Class 12 any stream at DU, BHU (50%); some BSc colleges prefer Science or Biology 3–4 years Academic base; not a licence on its own
BSc Clinical Psychology (RCI-approved) Class 12 Science, 50–55%; entrance test and interview 4 years Register as Clinical Assistant (Clinical Psychology) with RCI
Clinical / counselling BSc at private universities Class 12 merit or university test; check if RCI-approved 3–4 years Verify RCI approval before paying

Important

A “Clinical Psychology” title does not guarantee RCI recognition. Check the RCI list of approved institutes before you pay any fee. Science or Arts with Psychology or Biology is often preferred; at DU and BHU any Class 12 stream is accepted (BHU needs 50%). Some colleges accept Arts with Psychology for the RCI BSc. Several private universities use “Clinical Psychology” in the degree name without RCI approval.

The Clinical Route and RCI

Becoming a Clinical Psychologist

Step Stage Details
Step 1 Class 12 Any stream, Psychology helpful
Step 2 UG degree 4-year BA / BSc Psychology preferred
Step 3 RCI MA 2-year RCI-regulated MA in Clinical Psychology (replaces M.Phil)
Step 4 RCI registration Enrol on the Central Rehabilitation Register
Step 5 Practise Hospitals, clinics, private practice

RCI MA entry

4-year BA / BSc in Psychology with at least 55% (50% SC/ST). Three-year graduates need a bridge year or a first year of MA / MSc at 55%.

Licensing matters for clinical careers. In India clinical psychologists need an RCI-recognised qualification and registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (CRR number). The 2-year M.Phil in Clinical Psychology was the route until 2025-26; the RCI-regulated 2-year MA (Master) in Clinical Psychology replaces it from the 2025-26 and 2026 sessions. Over 20 institutions were approved for the new MA in early 2026. A general MA or MSc in Psychology, even from DU, TISS or BHU, does not by itself qualify for RCI registration. Check rehabcouncil.nic.in.

RCI: What Changed

Change Details
M.Phil is phased out The last M.Phil Clinical Psychology cycle was 2025-26. The RCI-regulated MA in Clinical Psychology now leads to registration.
New 4-year BSc (Hons) RCI-approved BSc Clinical Psychology (Hons): Class 12 Science, 20 seats per college, graduates register as Clinical Assistants.
Not every “clinical” degree counts Approved BSc institutes in 2025-26 include Apollo University, Amity, Gurugram University, CSMU, IILM and others. Verify the list.

Check

rehabcouncil.nic.in lists approved institutes, seats and validity years.

Approved institutes listed in 2025-26 include The Apollo University (Andhra Pradesh), Amity institutes (Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Bihar), Ashtavakra Institute (Delhi), IILM University (Gurugram), Gurugram University (applications May 8 to 30, 2026) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj University (applications January 28 to February 7, 2026). Fees are about ₹1.6 lakh for four years at CSMU and ₹1.8 to 2.4 lakh per year at SGT University. Approvals have validity periods and some are conditional, so verify. The M.Phil intake was to continue only until 2025-26.

The 4-Year UG Advantage

Year Level Note
Year 1 Certificate Exit with a certificate if needed
Year 2 Diploma Second exit point at most universities
Year 3 BA / BSc degree Standard 3-year degree
Year 4 Honours (research) Needed for direct RCI MA entry

Why it matters

The RCI MA in Clinical Psychology prefers a 4-year psychology degree. If you finish only 3 years you may need a bridge year, so choose a 4-year honours track where possible. Under NEP 2020 most universities offer multiple exit points with a 4-year honours or research degree; Christ University lists BSc (Hons) Psychology as 4 years (NEP) and Amity as 4 years with research. Confirm with the target institute.

Presidency College Chennai, Dr. Ambedkar Government Arts College (Vyasarpadi), Government Arts Colleges at Coimbatore and Kumbakonam (per TNGASA and college listings). Check the TNGASA booklet for the current seat list.

Most arts and science admissions in Tamil Nadu are strictly merit-based on Class 12 marks. In 2026 TNGASA registration opened on May 7 and closed on May 29 (with a June 1 window for those who missed it), followed by rank lists and counselling. Aided and autonomous colleges such as MCC, Stella Maris, WCC and Loyola run their own admission processes with merit lists and sometimes interviews.

Verify before you apply

RCI approval could not be confirmed for these BSc programmes. Ask each college for its RCI approval letter and check rehabcouncil.nic.in. The RCI list of approved 4-year BSc Clinical Psychology institutes found (2025-26) is mostly in north and central India and Andhra Pradesh (Apollo University); the Tamil Nadu institutions named here were not on those lists. A non-RCI BSc Clinical Psychology is still a valid UGC degree, but it does not give the RCI Clinical Assistant status.

Careers, Choose, Prepare and Key Takeaways

Tap a topic to open or close it.

Where Can It Take You?

Roles Where you work
Clinical psychologist (after RCI MA)
Clinical assistant (RCI BSc)
Counsellor / school counsellor
HR and organisational psychologist
UX / user researcher
Research associate
Child and special-education support
Sports and forensic psychology (PG)
Hospitals and mental health clinics
Schools and colleges
NGOs and rehabilitation centres
Companies (HR, UX research)
Research institutes and universities

Only RCI-registered clinical psychologists can use that title; counselling, HR, user research, education and research roles are open with a BA/BSc plus further study or skills. Check requirements for each role. Mental health work also includes psychiatric social workers and counsellors, who follow different registration rules.

Judging a Psychology College

Check What to look for
Approvals UGC recognition; RCI approval if the course claims clinical status
Faculty Permanent faculty with Ph.D. in psychology; active research
Practicum Supervised placements in hospitals, clinics, schools or NGOs
Labs Assessment kits, experimental psychology lab, counselling room
Alumni Where alumni study or work after the degree
Cost vs outcome Total fee (with hostel) against realistic salary or admission to PG

See the “How to judge any college” guide for NIRF, NAAC (now Accredited/levels) and NBA checks. Clinical hours and supervision quality matter more than the title of the degree.

Your Admission Calendar

When What Note
Now – Dec Shortlist colleges, check eligibility
Jan – Feb CUET-UG registration (expected); RCI BSc applications Tentative
Mar – Apr Class 12 board exams
May CUET exam; TNGASA applications 2026 pattern
Jul – Aug CUET results; DU, BHU counselling 2026 pattern

Heads-up

Colleges with their own tests (Christ, Mount Carmel) and RCI BSc programmes often open in January–May. RCI BSc programmes announced applications from late January (CSMU) and May (Gurugram University) in 2026. All 2027 dates are tentative; follow each college site.

Which Path Suits You?

If you… Consider
I want to treat patients (Science in Class 12) RCI BSc Clinical (4 yrs) → RCI MA Clinical Psychology
I want a broad humanities degree on a budget BA (Hons) Psychology via CUET-UG at DU or BHU
I want to stay in Tamil Nadu B.Sc Psychology at Presidency, MCC, Stella Maris, WCC, Loyola
I like counselling and helping BSc Counselling Psychology (Loyola, MSSW) → MSc Counselling
I like research and statistics 4-year BSc (Hons) → MSc / PhD; University of Hyderabad 5-year MSc
I like business and people BA / BSc Psychology → HR or organisational psychology

Students who want clinical practice should plan the RCI route early because the MA entry needs a 4-year psychology degree with 55%.

Prepare Smart

Tip Why
Read widely Pick up introductory psychology books and case studies.
Practise writing Interviews and entrance tests include written and presentation tasks.
Brush up statistics Research methods and statistics are core in every BSc and BA course.
Volunteer NGOs, helplines and schools build empathy and a CV.
Verify approvals Check UGC and RCI status before paying any fee.
Track deadlines CUET registration opens January; college tests vary.

Christ University selection includes a micro presentation and personal interview, so presentation practice helps.

Key Takeaways

  • UG psychology is open to any stream at DU, BHU and TISS (via CUET-UG); Tamil Nadu government colleges admit on Class 12 marks.
  • To be a clinical psychologist you need the RCI route: 4-year UG, then the 2-year RCI MA (replacing M.Phil), then RCI registration.
  • New RCI-approved BSc Clinical Psychology (Hons) programmes exist; verify approval before paying.
  • Fees run from about ₹10K total (BHU) to ₹4–9 L at private universities; add hostel and practicum costs.

Before you apply

Fees, approvals and dates must be confirmed with colleges and the RCI.
