Government, state and private scholarships: who can apply, how much you get, when to apply and how to avoid rejection
Licensed to Isprieth Academy · Learn • Share • Empower
This guide covers scholarships you can use for any undergraduate course: the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) schemes, special schemes such as INSPIRE and AICTE Pragati, private scholarships from Reliance, Kotak, HDFC, LIC and others, and Tamil Nadu state schemes. It reflects the 2026-27 cycle, and several amounts, income limits and dates in older guides have changed.
Deadlines open right now
NSP schemes and HDFC ECSS close on October 31, 2026. Kotak Kanya closes October 15, Tata Capital Pankh October 26 and Aditya Birla Capital October 30. Information is current as of October 8, 2026; confirm every figure and date on the official site.

The Big Picture
Tap a topic to open or close it.
Four Kinds of Scholarships
| Type | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Central government | NSP: merit-cum-means and category schemes (CSSS, post-matric, PM YASASVI, AICTE) |
| State government | Your state: Tamil Nadu has Pudhumai Penn, Tamil Pudhalvan, First Graduate and the 7.5% quota |
| Private & CSR | Reliance, Kotak, HDFC, LIC, Aditya Birla, Tata: apply on their sites or Buddy4Study |
| College & institute | Merit and need waivers from your own college; ask at admission |
Rule of thumb
Apply to all four types you qualify for; they run on separate timelines and can often be combined. One caution from NSP: from 2026-27 students may apply for one merit-based scheme and one or more welfare-based schemes. Government schemes on NSP are mostly merit-cum-means or category based; Buddy4Study hosts many private scholarships.
The Timing Trap
| Point | Details |
|---|---|
| Most need admission first | Kotak, Reliance and LIC ask for first-year enrolment in the same year, so you apply after you join college |
| Windows open Jun–Oct | NSP opened Jun 1, 2026; most private ones ran Aug–Oct |
| Prepare documents in advance | Income and community certificates take days to issue and must be recent |
| Missed = wait a year | Most schemes have one window; extensions are not guaranteed |
For Class 12 students
Your windows will be Jun–Oct 2027. Get documents ready by May.
In 2026-27 NSP opened on June 1 with post-matric deadlines on October 31; Reliance ran August 14 to October 5; Kotak Kanya July 14 to October 15 (some sites say September 30); HDFC ECSS to October 31; LIC September 1 to 30. An older guide said most windows open July to November. Because first-year scholarships need you to be enrolled in that academic year, students now in Class 12 should plan for June to October 2027 and prepare certificates beforehand.

NSP: Your First Step
| Step | Action | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Register (OTR) | Create an Aadhaar-linked One Time Registration on scholarships.gov.in |
| Step 2 | Face authentication | Complete Aadhaar face authentication with the NSP / Aadhaar face app |
| Step 3 | Bank seeding | Use an Aadhaar-linked, NPCI-seeded account for direct benefit transfer |
| Step 4 | Apply | Choose schemes you qualify for; upload documents before the deadline |
| Step 5 | Verification | Your college verifies, then the nodal officer; check status regularly |
New rule from 2026-27
You may apply for one merit-based scheme and one or more welfare-based schemes. NSP opened Jun 1, 2026; most schemes close Oct 31, with institute verification to Nov 15 and nodal verification to Nov 30. CSSS renewals had earlier dates on some pages, so always check the live NSP banner.

- NSP lists a renewal window to October 31, 2026 with institute verification to November 15; some sources show September 30 and describe the 2026-27 round as renewals only, so confirm fresh-application status on NSP.
- You can hold one merit-based scheme plus welfare schemes.
2.2 Post-Matric and Category Schemes
| Scheme | Who | Income cap | Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| SC / ST post-matric | SC, ST students after Class 10 | ₹2.5 L | Course fees + maintenance allowance |

Updates from 2026-27 NSP sources: SC and ST post-matric income ceiling ₹2.5 lakh; PM YASASVI also uses ₹2.5 lakh; minority post-matric ₹2 lakh and merit-cum-means (professional and technical courses) ₹2.5 lakh. Tamil Nadu Student Schemes
| Scheme | Details |
|---|---|
| Pudhumai Penn | ₹1,000 a month for girls who studied Classes 6–12 in TN government (or aided) schools, until the first UG / diploma ends; no income limit; applied through your college on penkalvi.tn.gov.in |

Pudhumai Penn is the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar scheme (Penkalvi portal; applications go through the college). Both Pudhumai Penn and Tamil Pudhalvan have no income limit and can be combined with other scholarships. The First Graduate concession reimburses tuition for first-generation graduates in professional courses (G.O. 85 of 2010; e-certificate from e-Sevai before counselling); the 7.5% quota gives a complete fee waiver (tuition, hostel and development fees) paid by the State. The TNEA site is tneaonline.org (not tnea.tngov.in).
TN Fee Waivers and Post-Matric
| Scheme | Details |
|---|---|

Documents to Keep Ready
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Class 10 & 12 marksheets | Latest and previous exam |
| Income certificate | From Tahsildar / revenue authority; recent and for the right financial year |
| Community / minority certificate | For SC / ST / OBC / minority schemes |
| Aadhaar & bank passbook | Account Aadhaar-seeded for direct benefit transfer |
| Bonafide / fee receipt | From your current college |
| Special certificates | First Graduate e-certificate (from e-Sevai), school study certificate (Class 6–12), disability certificate (Saksham and other schemes) |
Income certificates should be current; many portals reject old ones.
Why Applications Get Rejected
| Reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| Face authentication not done | NSP now needs Aadhaar face authentication; finish it at registration |
| Bank not seeded | Use an Aadhaar-linked, NPCI-seeded account in the student’s own name |
| Name or date mismatch | Spelling must match Aadhaar, marksheet and bank record |
| Old or wrong certificate | Income certificate for the wrong year, or wrong category |
| Pending verification | College or nodal officer did not verify before the deadline |
| Wrong scheme | Ignoring course, marks or income rules of the scheme |
Apply early so you have time to fix errors before the deadline and verification dates.
Keep It: Renewal Rules
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Marks | Many schemes renew only if you keep a minimum CGPA, commonly 8.0 or similar |
| Attendance & regular mode | Stay in a regular full-time course; do not switch to distance mode |
| Renew on time | NSP renewals for 2026-27 close Oct 31, verification to Nov 30 |
| Report changes | Tell the scheme if you change college, course or bank account |
Read the continuation criteria
Read the continuation criteria of each scheme at the time you accept it; they differ.
Scholarship Scam Alert
| Warning | Details |
|---|---|
| Never pay to apply | Genuine government and CSR scholarships do not charge application or “processing” fees |
| Use official portals | scholarships.gov.in, .gov.in and the sponsor’s own site; beware look-alike addresses |
| Protect your OTPs | Never share Aadhaar OTPs, passwords or bank PINs with agents |
| Beware guaranteed offers | “100% scholarship guaranteed” or direct-admission promises are red flags |
Doubt?
Ask your college scholarship cell or the NSP helpdesk listed on scholarships.gov.in. Buddy4Study is a legitimate aggregator that hosts many private scholarships, but always check the sponsor’s own site as well. Government scholarships are applied for free on NSP; never pay an agent.
